We are delighted to announce that TAI 2027 will be held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong (27-29 May 2027).
The TAI conference originated from the International Symposium on Tonal Aspects of Languages (TAL) and the Conference on Tone and Intonation in Europe (TIE). TAI 2027 aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for distinguished scholars, experts, and practitioners to exchange ideas and discuss the latest advances in the study of tone and intonation. The conference proceedings will be archived by ISCA (the International Speech Communication Association).
The special theme of TAI 2027, “Universality and Specificity of Tone and Intonation Systems,” addresses a central question in prosodic research: Which aspects of tone and intonation are shared across languages (universal), and which are shaped by language-specific, cultural, or social factors (specific)? We encourage submissions on the production, perception, and acquisition of tone and intonation, as well as their interactions with semantics, pragmatics, speech-language pathology, and speech technology. We particularly welcome research drawing on typology, phonetics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and speech technology to identify patterns that transcend individual languages, as well as studies examining variation across languages, generations, dialects, regions, social groups, and bilingual or multilingual contexts.
