Menghui Shi

Menghui Shi is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Fudan University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Human Genetics and Anthropology. He received his PhD in Linguistics from Leiden University. His research focuses on experimental phonetics, sociophonetics, and Chinese dialectology, with particular emphasis on Wu and Xiang dialects. He investigates sound system variation and change using laboratory phonetic methods, including tone–segment interaction, phonetic variation, and language contact effects. His work integrates acoustic analysis with quantitative approaches to explain phonological patterns across dialects and social contexts. He has published in leading journals such as the Journal of the International Phonetic Association and the Journal of Chinese Linguistics, and has contributed to both theoretical and empirical studies of Chinese phonetics and phonology.
